Training Description

The water lifeguard course is the only required training to work independently as a lifeguard. Additional courses and degrees are not necessary to serve as a lifeguard.

Course Duration

The training includes a minimum of 63 teaching units, which take place both in the swimming pool and in open water. The total duration of the course depends on the specific group of participants, dates and location of the training. A detailed schedule is made available at organizational meetings or in announcements.

Prerequisites

Prior to the start of the course, a verification of participants' swimming skills is conducted. Each participant is given clear guidelines as to his or her level and required skills to complete the course. The key requirement is to swim 400 meters in any style in under 8 minutes. On the day of the exam, each participant must be at least 18 years old.

Final Examination

The exam consists of two parts: theoretical and practical.

  1. Theoretical Part: A test containing 30 questions.

  2. Practical Part:

    • Swim 400 meters by any method in under 8 minutes.

    • Swim 50 meters in rescue style (with head above the water surface) in under 55 seconds.
    • To swim in no more than 2 min 40 s in a rescue rowboat or kayak using two oars a distance of 75 m in a straight line to a buoy (reaching it by the stern) and on - returning to the starting point using one oar.
    • Conducting a simulated rescue operation.
    • Towing a drowning person for a distance of 150 meters without a break.
    • Pulling the drowning person to the shore (30cm) and placing him in the position for KPP (Qualified First Aid).
Certificates

After completing the training and passing the exam, participants receive a certificate in accordance with the model specified in the Regulation of the Minister of Internal Affairs of June 21, 2012 on training in water rescue (Journal of Laws, item 747).
